What is the “2026” citizenship test?
If you are applying for U.S. citizenship in 2026, you will study the latest civics test — the official 128-question USCIS civics test. USCIS officially calls it the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test because it took effect for Form N-400 applications filed on or after October 20, 2025. It is still the current, latest test in 2026, so “2026 citizenship test” and “2025 civics test” refer to the same 128 questions.
How the test works
The civics test is oral. A USCIS officer reads questions aloud during your interview and you answer out loud in English.
You study 128 questions. The officer asks up to 20 of them, in any order.
You pass at 12 correct. The officer stops once you reach 12 correct or 9 incorrect.
If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20+ years, you study a reduced set and answer 10 questions, needing 6 correct.
